Industrial Growth

  1. In the history of industrial sector in Tamil Nadu, the creation of industrial estates that accommodated several industries within a campus was first initiated by the DMK government. In 1971, the DMK government established an institution namely State Industrial Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) for this purpose. With the help of SIPCOT, the first industrial estate was established in 1973 at Ranipet in a 729.78-acre campus. About 107 new industries were established at a cost of Rs. 168 crores. 
  2. The second industrial estate was established in Hosur in the year 1974 in a land area of 1,236 acres. About 186 industries were established at a cost of Rs. 500 crores in the industrial estate. In these two industrial estates, about 20,000 youth were provided with employment.
  3. In 1989, during the DMK rule the second phase was established a land area of 133 acres. About 99 new industries were established in the campus and about 3,400 youth were provided employment. A second phase was established in Hosur in a land are of 457 acres. About 64 new industries were established and about 6,000 youth were provided with employment.
  4. When the DMK formed the government for the fourth time in 1996, the SIPCOT created industrial estates in Thiruperumbudhur, Irungattukottai, and Gummidipoondi export zone. New industrial estates are being established in Nemili and Cheiyaar. About 12,500 acres of land has been acquired for this purpose. Kalaignar inaugurated the industrial estate in Perundurai on 1.7.2000. The Perundurai industrial estate has been established on a 2,800-acre campus at a cost of Rs. 110 crores.
Key Industries set up in DMK Period
  1. The fertilizer producing unit SPIC in Thoothukudi was established.
  2. Alkali chemicals industry that produces soda ash and ammonium chloride was put up in Thoothukudi.
  3. Tamil Nadu Chemical Products Ltd. that produces sodium hydrosulphite  was inaugurated in Karaikudi.
  4. Chromates and Chemicals Limited that produces chromium sulphate, sodium dichromate, and sodium sulphate was commissioned in Ranipet during DMK period.
  5. Pandiyan Chemicals Ltd. that produces potassium chloride at Narasingampatti was commissioned in Madurai.
  6. Tamil Nadu Fluorine and Allied Chemicals Ltd. that produces aluminum fluoride at Manalur was commissioned in Ramanathapuram district.
  7. Tamil Nadu Dada pharmaceuticals that produces medicines was commissioned in Pallavaram.
  8. Dynavision Ltd. that produces televisions was commissioned in Adyar.
  9. Marthik crystal salts industry the produces industrial salts iwas commissioned n Kovalam.
  10. Asia tobacco industry was commissioned near Hosur.
  11. Launch building industry was commissioned in the Mandapam area.
  12. Tamil Nadu Alkaline Batteries was commissioned in the Ambattur industrial estate.
  13. Asian Bearing Ltd. was commissioned near Hosur.
  14. Casting and Forging Industry was commissioned in Arakkonam.
  15. Intercontinental Leather Ltd. was commissioned in Chennai.
  16. Alkaline Battery industry was commissioned in Karaikudi.
  17. Adyar Instronics campus was commissioned.
  18. Styro Films industries was commissioned in the same campus.
  19. Tamil Nadu International Electronics Ltd. was commissioned near Hosur.
  20. Southern Borax Ltd at Thacchur was commissioned in Cholavaram union.

  29. Tantech Agro industries in Cuddalore with an investment of Rs. 6 crores was commissioned.
  30. Tungsten metal powder industry in Cuddalore with an investment of Rs. 40 crores was commissioned.
  31. Butane production unit in the Manali oil refinery was commissioned.
  32. U.B. Petro products in Manali with an investment of Rs. 81 crores was commissioned.
  33. Artificial diamond manufacturing unit near Melur with an investment of Rs. 8.88 crores was commissioned.
  34. Tamil Nadu magnesite and marine chemicals industry in Valinokkam with an investment of Rs. 10.40 crores was commissioned.
  35. Tamil Nadu Fluorine and Sulphide Chemicals (TANFAC) in Cuddalore with an investment of Rs. 29.50 crores was commissioned.
  36. Titan watch spare parts manufacturing industry in Hosur with an investment of Rs. 30.30 crores was commissioned.
  37. M.R. Krishanamuthy cooperative sugar factory in Sethiyathope with an investment of Rs. 28 crores was commissioned.
  38. Expansion of sugar factory in Perambalur was commissioned. 
  39. Expansion of cooperative sugar factory in Vellore with an investment of Rs. 10 crores was commissioned.
  40. About 19,000 youth have been provided with employment opportunities in the 118 industries established since 1996 until now. The erstwhile government established only 22 industries during its five-year tenure and provided employment opportunities to only 4,230 people.
  41. Application for the single window approval system has been introduced for the benefit of entrepreneurs in Tamil Nadu.
  42. Hyundai Motor Corporation has established a new car manufacturing unit in Irungattukkottai with an investment of Rs. 2,450 crores. The plant is capable of producing 1,20,000 new cars per annum. As these cars are being exported, we get considerable income through foreign exchange. About 2,500 people are directly employed and about 25,000 are indirectly employed by the company.
  43. Mitsubishi has established a car manufacturing unit in Thiruvallur with an investment of Rs. 320 crores. The industry, which started production on 14.4.1998, has an annual capacity of producing 1 lakh cars. About 800 people have been directly employed and about 6,400 people are indirectly employed by the company.
  44. Ford has established its production unit at Maraimalai Nagar with an investment of Rs. 1,700 crores. The industry, which has a production capacity of 1 lakh cars per annum, started functioning on 19.3.1999. About 2,000 people have been directly employed and about 10,000 have been indirectly employed through this company.
  45. Tantech Agro chemicals Ltd. in Cuddalore was commissioned with an investment of Rs. 12.16 crores.
  46. Blooming meadows Ltd. flower preservation center, which is 100% export oriented, was established near Hosur with and investment of Rs. 5.42 crores. It started production in January 1997.
  47. SKM Egg products industry, which is a 100% export oriented, was established with an investment of Rs. 35 crores in Salangapalayam in the Erode district. It started production on 12.7.1997.
  48. Bharath Tex Fashions Ltd. was established at Chettipunniyam village in Kanchipuram with an investment of Rs. 5.10 crores.
  49. Darbar Dupan Ltd. Company was established in Gummidipoondi with an investment of Rs. 300 crores. 
  50. Asian lighting resources India Ltd. was established in Tambaram export zone with an investment of Rs. 27 crores and the company started production on 26.3.98.
  51. Karur Yarn Links Limited is an export oriented company, which was established in Apparpalayam in Karur with an investment of Rs. 4.5 crores. It started production in March 1998.
  52. Davrus novelties Ltd. in Chokkarasan palli near Hosur was established with an investment of Rs. 10.20 crores. 
  53. Sriram Auto spare parts production industry was established at Idaiyankuppam near Thiruporur with an investment of Rs. 21 crores. It started production on 25.6.1998. 
  54. V.S.N.L. Earth Station, which was established with an investment of Rs. 110 crores, had its ‘B dish’ section functional in June 1998 and ‘A dish’ section functional in June 1999. 
  55. Lumax Samlip India limited was established in Irungattukottai with an investment of Rs. 8.6 crores.
  56. Ramana Sekar Steels Ltd. was established in Chennai Manali with an investment of Rs. 10.18 crores and started production in October 1998.
  57. JPM Sangvu, a sheet metal product industry, was with an investment of Rs. 45 crores in Irungattukottai.
  58. JKM Daerim Ltd., a vehicle spare parts manufacturing industry, was established with and investment of Rs. 17 crores in Irungattukottai.
  59. Medtech products Ltd. was established with an investment of Rs. 27.70 crores at Maanur village near Thirupperumbudhur and started production on 20.8.98.
  60. Elgin India Ltd. was established with an investment of Rs. 40 crores in Irungattukottai and started production in 1998.
  61. Dynamatic Technologies Ltd., a spare parts manufacturing company, was established with an investment of Rs. 23 crores in Irungattukottai.
  62. HC Manufacturing Ltd., a car door manufacturing company, was established with an investment of Rs. 9 crores in Irungattukottai.
  63. Donghee Vision Industries, a sheet metal products company, was established with an investment of Rs. 43 crores in Irungattukottai.
  64. Sharda Motor industries, a company that manufactures car exhaust, was established with an investment of Rs. 9 crores in Irungattukottai.
  65. Orchid Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Ltd. was established with an investment of Rs. 50 crores in Alandur near Chennai and started production in November 1998.
  66. Citizen Watches, a watch assembling project, was established with an investment of Rs. 8 crores in Chennai and started functioning in December 1998.
  67. Sundaram Clayton Automobile foundry division was established in Hosur and started production in December 1998.
  68. Sam Greaves Ltd., tractor production and assembling unit, was established with an investment of Rs. 44 crores in Ranipet and declared open in December 1998.
  69. Ambika Sugar Factory was established with an investment of Rs. 40 crores in Coimbatore in March 1998.
  70. Tanfac industries Ltd. (Fluoro benzene project) was started with an investment of Rs. 11.60 crores in Cuddalore in Febraury 1999.
  71. Tanfac industries Ltd. (Hydro floric project) has started production in March 1999.
  72. Salem Iron and Steel Company was established with an investment of Rs. 500 crores on 31.3.99.
  73. Epoxy resin project by Petro Araldite Company was established with an investment of Rs. 50 crores in Manali and started production in March 1999.
  74. Associated Cement Companies Madukkarai cement project was established with an investment of Rs. 33 crores and started production on March 1999.
  75. Hyderabad Industries - Autoclayed Aerated Concrete Block Project was established with an investment of Rs. 25 crores and started production in March 1999
  76. Lakshmi Auto components Ltd., a spare parts division, was established with an investment of Rs. 43 crores in Hosur and started functioning in March 1999.
  77. GMR Vasavi, a private electricity production unit was established with an investment of Rs. 825 crores at Basin Bridge in Chennai and started production in March 1999.
  78. Thiru Arooran Sugars sugar factory was established with an investment of Rs. 22.90 crores at Thirumandangudi in Thanjavur district and started production from June 1999.
  79. Visteon Powertrain System India Ltd., with an investment of Rs. 275 crores started functioning in 1999.
  80. Visteon automotive system India Ltd. was established with an investment of Rs. 325 crores and started functioning in 1999.
  81. Mahindra Industrial Park Ltd. was established in Singaperumalkoil near Chennai with an investment of Rs. 210 crores and started functioning in 1999.
  82. Matsushita Air Conditioning Company, producer of room air conditioners, was established with an investment of Rs. 59.54 crores in Irungattukottai and started functioning in 1999.
  83. Mando Brake Systems India Ltd., a spare parts manufacturing unit, was established with an investment of Rs. 30 crores in Irungattukottai and started functioning in 1999.
  84. Valeo India bricks & materials Pvt. Ltd. established a car spare parts manufacturing unit with an investment of Rs. 27 crores in Maraimalainagar and started functioning from 1999.
  85. Stetter GmbH, a German company involved in manufacturing construction equipment, was established with an investment of Rs. 18 crores and started functioning in 1999.
  86. Autolec Industries Ltd., which produces oil and water pumps was established with an investment of Rs. 5 crores in Irungattukottai and started its production from October 1999.
  87. On behalf of Tuticorin Port Trust, sea floor deepening project was initiated with an investment of Rs. 202 crores in November 1999.
  88. Indian Natural Medical Products Pvt. Ltd. was established with an investment of Rs. 5.60 crores near Chennai and started production from December 1999.
  89. Involve Medicals India Ltd. was established with an investment of Rs. 15 crores in Thiruperumbudhur and started production in March 2000.
  90. Reynolds Ball Pen Components was established with an investment of Rs. 30 crores in Irungattukottai and started production from March 2000.
  91. Sembawang Shriram Integrated Logistics from Singapore established its manufacturing unit with an investment of Rs. 33 crores in Puzhal.
  92. Marcube India, producer of machinery for cardboard manufacturing was established with an investment of Rs. 50 crores in Irungattukottai.
  93. Kovema wood Plast PVC sheet manufacturing company was established with an investment of Rs. 44 crores in Irungattukottai and started production in March 2000.
  94. Insteel industries Ltd., a vehicle spare parts manufacturing company, was established with an investment of Rs. 12.50 crores and production was started in March 2000.
  95. Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO), Central Governments Telecommunications Consultants India Ltd (TCIL), and Japan’s Fujikura together established a sophisticated optic fiber telecom manufacturing unit with an investment of Rs.28.50 crores on 26.5.2000.
  96. PRAX Air India Private Ltd. was established with an investment of Rs. 60 crores in Thiruperumbudhur. I declared opened it on 21.8.2000. The company produces Industrial gases.
  97. PRAX Air India has established several industrial sectors with an investment of Rs. 175 crores.
  98. Saint-Gobain glass industry with French technology was established with an investment of Rs. 525 crores and declared open on 27.9.2000. It would generate a foreign exchange of Rs. 100 crores.
  99. Tanflora Infrastructure Park, a flower preserving facility with an investment of Rs. 24.85 crores, has been proposed. A floral industrial park is being constructed on 220 acres of land in Hosur. It will start exporting flowers in March 2001. This project will provide direct employment to 500 people and indirect employment to 1,000. 
  100. Government of Tamil Nadu, TIDCO, and India Trade Promotion Organization (ITPO) together will establish a Trade Center for exhibition and conferences at Nandambakkam. The campus would be on a 2-lakh square feet area with all the infrastructure facilities and equipments in it. As a first step, a building of 50,000 square feet is under construction.
  101. Madras Refineries Ltd. is establishing an oil refinery near Saint-Gobain glass industry with an investment of Rs. 4 crores. It would be a center for sales of high quality motor spirit, and high speed diesel.
  102. The Madras Refineries Ltd., which has been renamed as Chennai Petroleum Corporation is expanding its Manali sector with an investment of Rs. 2,360 crores to process 30-lakh tons of crude oil.
  103. Epomin Industries Ltd. is being established in the Thiruperumbudhur industrial estate with an investment of Rs.2.89 crores
  104. Mukuts packaging Ltd. is being established with an investment of Rs. 1.20 crores in Thiruperumbudhur industrial estate.
  105. The Pennar Refineries Ltd. from Andhra Pradesh is establishing an oil refinery in Thiruchopuram in the Cuddalore district with an investment of Rs. 3,480 crores. The unit would be capable of processing 6.5 million tons of crude oil per annum.
  106. The central government’s ministry of commerce and SIPCOT are together involved in creating an Export Promotion Industrial Park in an area of 224 acres in Gummidipoondi with an investment of Rs. 19.90 lakhs. 
  107. Narmadha Textiles Company is a pioneer in garment export. TIDCO has planned to join hands with Narmadha Textiles and establish a sophisticated garment manufacturing unit with an investment of Rs. 80 crores. The first phase of the project with an investment of Rs. 33.64 crores will be completed in March 2001.
  108. TIDCO had signed a memorandum with M/s Vasavi Industrial Group to establish a 100% export oriented Composite Textile Mills with an investment of Rs. 377 crores in Dharmapuri district. The commercial production of this industry would begin next year (2001-2002).
  109. In order to compete in the international market, a garment park will be established near Chennai with an investment of Rs. 60 crores by TIDCO cooperative department. This park will start its commercial functioning next year.
  110. A Hi-tech industrial park in Nanguneri : TIDCO along with the Infac India group of America and Axes technologies is establishing this Hi-tech industrial park. The industrial park would house all necessary basic infrastructure required for establishing companies. It is expected that companies from America, Japan, Korea and other countries would establish their units in the park. The companies would be investing about Rs. 8,000 crores in this industrial park.
  111. The Central commerce and industries minister Mr. Murasoli Maran on 31.3.2000 announced the Nanguneri Hi-tech industrial park as a Special Economic Zone under the import/export policy (EXIM POLICY). The procedure for importing required equipment and raw materials for the industries located within the park would be easy.
  112. 25 MoUs have been signed for starting 37 new industries on an investment of Rs.46,091 crores, which would provide employment opportunities to about 2 lakh 52 thousand 569 persons.
